Note: Wed 31-Jan-2001 Obituary in "Philadelphia Inquirer". 2 The Rev. Joseph F. Smith. Parish priest, 91. 2 The Rev. Joseph F. Smith, 91, pastor emeritus of St. Christopher Roman Catholic Church, died Sunday of heart failure at Villa St. Joseph, a retirement community in Darby for Catholic clergy. 2 Father Smith was pastor of St. Christopher until his retirement in 1980, when emeritus status was conferred upon him. 2 Born in Philadelphia, Father Smith attended St. Joseph's Preparatory School before going on to St. Charles Borromeo Seminary. He was ordained in 1935. 2 His long ministerial career included a succession of positions throughout the Philadelphia region. 2 He was assistant pastor at St. Cecilia in Coatesville and St. Philomena in Lansdowne, and at Incarnation, Our Lady of Ransom, and St. Cecilia parishes in Philadelphia. He was chaplain at Sacred Heart Hospital and parochial administrator at St. Philip Neri Church, where he was appointed pastor in 1966. 2 The following year, he began his 13-year appointment as pastor of St. Christopher's in Northeast Philadelphia. 2 Father Smith is survived by sisters Mary Stuart, Eleanor Lajoie and Cathryn Fisher. 2 A Funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. today at St. Francis Country House, 1412 Lansdowne Ave., Darby. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon. 2
