Killed in action during World War II while flying aboard a U.S. Army Air Corps B-17 "Flying Fortress" heavy bomber (#42-30803) on a bombing run over Nazi Germany. 8th Air Force, 92nd Bomb Group. He was the youngest son born to Homer Hubert Smith and Stella Lucy (Harris) Smith. He was only 22.
