Biography

William was born about 1852 in Hawkins county, Tennessee^[1][2]. In 1873, he married Martha Jane Quinley^[3][1]. In 1880, he lived in Jonesville, Virginia with his wife and three children ^[2].

Research Notes

Description of the 1880 Jonesville enumeration district 41^[4]:

All of Jonesville Magisterial District lying north and west of a line commencing where Powels River crosses the line of White Shoals Magisterial District, thence with the River to where the road from Jonesville to Rogersville crosses said river, thence with said road to the Estillville road at MA Richmonds house, thence with said Estellville and Jonesville road to the line or Rocky Station Magisterial District.

• Born in Hawkins County, Tennessee. Tennessee is his birthplace in the 1880 Census^[2]. However, Lee County, Virginia is noted in the marriage compilation. There his wife is noted as being born in Hawkins Co, Tennessee, so it seems likely their birthplaces have been switched^[1].
• He died on 10 Jun 1889, cited but not verified: Cemeteries of Lee Co., VA, Volume II, p. 619
• His parents were James and Nancy Smith

His wife's Find-A-Grave record suggests that his middle initials were A. C.^[5]. A supporting source is the birth record for his son Robert in a compilation, ^[6], but the original has not been examined.
