Herbert was born on 25 March 1882 in Oldbury, Worcestershire, England. He was the son of Thomas Smith and Mary Grigg.[1][2]

In the 1891 census Herbert (age 9) was living at 11 Wellington Street, Oldbury, Worcestershire, England. Relation to Head: Son.[1]

In the 1901 census Herbert (age 19) was living at 3 Weston Road, Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England. Relation to Head of House: Son.[3]

When Herbert was 27 he married Francesca May Nicholas on 2 December 1909 in Gloucester, St Paul, Gloucestershire, England. The couple had 2 children: Gwen Smith and Marion Smith.[4][5]

In the 1911 census Herbert (age 29) was living at 169 Seymour Road, Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England. Marital Status: Married. Relation to Head of House: Head.[6]

In the 1939 register Herbert (age 57) was living at 6 Robinson Road, Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England. Marital Status: MarriedOccupation: Foreman Blacksmith.[2]

Herbert died at the age of about 86 in 1969 and was buried in Badgworth, Sedgemoor District, Somerset, England.[7]
