ALLIANCE — Donald Sylvester Smith, 91, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at The Crandall Medical Center, Sebring.
Born Dec. 6, 1907 in Canton, he was the son of the late Dervin Erasmus and Estella Corda (Youtz) Smith, and had lived in Alliance from 1914 until moving to Sebring in 1997. Mr. Smith was a tech sergeant, having served during World War II with the U.S. Army from Oct. 24, 1942, until Nov. 2, 1945. He was a member of the Vine Street United Methodist Church of Alliance, where he was a Sunday school teacher for 43 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 271 F. & A.M., Chapter 83, Royal Arch Masons, past commander of Alliance Commandry No. 67 Knights Templar, and was a charter member and past president of the Alliance AARP.
Surviving are a son, Donald D. Smith and daughter-in-law, Catherine Smith.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Louise (Myers) Smith, Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999; two brothers, Lawrence E. Smith and Herbert L. Smith; and a sister, Sevilla S. Wright.
Friends will be received from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at The Walton-Schrader Funeral Home, Alliance, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, with the Rev. Dan Brown and the Rev. William Wright officiating. Interment will be in Fairmont Memorial Park, Alliance.
