Edith was born in 1906 at home, 71 Clinton St (Bloomfield?), NJ. She got a degree in Library Science from New Jersey College for Women (later Douglas College). She worked as assistant librarian in the Paterson, NJ, Public Library for many years before she and husband Arthur Clark moved to New Smyrna Beach, FL, where she was head librarian. She made a point of working with Black librarians in the county system and welcoming ordinary Black users to the city library. This was a strong social justice stance when civil rights in the South were still weak. One line of Edith's roots goes back to Thomas Clarke, mate on the Mayflower (1620) who returned on a later voyage (1623) and resided in Plymouth, MA. [2]
