- from Civil War information on Lieut. James S. Scott, Barren Co., KY: "Mrs. Scott's parents were Eleazer and Sally (Harrison) Peden, natives of North Carolina and Monroe Co, KY respectively. Eleazer Peden was a farmer and slave owner, and a son of Moses and Martha (Smith) Peden, both of whom were reared in North Carolina. Moses in early life was a saddler, later an extensive farmer and slave owner, and one of the early settlers of Barren Co."

I question the 1771 birth location for Martha (Smith) Peden as being Botetourt County, VA colony. The next four siblings were born in New Jersey. I have always felt she was born either in PA or NJ. Sue Davis-82334
