Hilda was born in 1917, in Pontefract, Yorkshire. She was the fifth child of Frederick Smith and Sarah Ellen Jones. Her family moved to Australia in 1924 after being sponsored by family friends[1]. Her only sibling born in Australia, Arthur, was born two years after their arrival.
Hilda lived in Corrimal for most of her childhood in Australia. She left school at the age of 15, looking after a baby in Bondi. At the age of 20, Hilda worked in the Nestle factory in Fivedock.
Hilda met her husband, Alexander (though she called him Alec) on a Sydney-bound train in 1942. They were married in 1944. Hilda and Alec moved into a garage in Mortdale after living in a shared house in Redfern, before they built a house on the land for the family to live in. Hilda and Alec were both a part of the Masonic Club.
Once her children had moved out, Hilda and Alec moved to Long Jetty, then back to Corrimal. They moved into Towradgi in 1988, after discovering Alex had a brain tumour. He passed away in 1989.
Hilda went on a trip to visit cousins in England in 1993. She moved to Menai around 2000. Hilda passed away in 2006.
