Maria Smith was born about 1804. She answered yes to being born in Nottinghamshire on the 1841 census[1] but on the 1851 census, in the space for birthplace she answered "in the Army".[2]
She married Isaac Armstrong at St Mary and All Saints, Chesterfield, Derbyshire on the 8th November 1824. They were married by banns and both were "of this parish". Witnesses to the marriage were Sarah Hicks and William Edwards.[3]
On the 1841 census, Isaac and Maria Armstrong lived at Upper Green, Sutton in Ashfield, where Isaac was a Higgler. Also in the household were Eliza Smith, (14) and their children Ann Armstrong, (12) Isaac, (11) Matthew, (4) Sarah (3) and Samuel.(1)[1] Eliza Smith was born after Maria's marriage, so was possibly a younger sister or niece.
In 1851, Isaac and "Mira" Armstrong still lived at Upper Green, and Isaac's occupation was labourer. They had six children in this year: Matthew, (15) Sarah, (13) Samuel, (11) Harriett, (9) Eliza (5) and Esther.(2)[2][4]
She died at Sutton in 1856, aged 51[5] and was buried at St Mary's church, Sutton in Ashfield on the 9th January 1856. Her abode at death was Sutton.[6]
