Biography

Thomas Smith was a descendant of Sir Alfred Smith of New Brunswick, one of the originators of the Confederation of Canada. He was appointed postmaster of Gilby, ND in 1913.

Documents from Hugh Swofford, direct descendent. He sent documents showing Thomas E. Smith, a direct descendent of Mayflower passenger John Smith b.1614, Dorsetshire, who came on the ship White Angel, May 1630. In 1640 he was Minister at Barnstable, to 1673 then to Sandwich where he died Oct. 2, 1710.

Shown in Biography of John R. Gile 1895 as Mary A. being married to W. E. Smith, not Thomas E.; in biography of Charles A. Gile as being Thomas E. Smith;both of Volga, S.D. or railroad; in obituary of James E. Gile (Mason City,Iowa) as James' sister of Gilby, N.D. T.E. was correct, W. E. was error.

John and Ray Gile visited the Smith home in Gilby many times, have photos in file and knew children who also visited us in Winnipeg. Hugh Swofford attended a 100th reunion in Gilby in 1987? and saw the Kilmartins.

Hugh Swofford says Smith was descended from Sir Alfred Smith of New Brunswick,Canada, one of the originators of the Confederacy(?) of Canada. 4 generationsup there.

Smith naturalized American citizen - State of Minnesota, Vol 67, ED 203, Sheet4, Line 84, House 767 on 1900 census, age 52. Immigrated 1881, naturalized 1890Brookings Co. SD. Christened at St. Martins in the Woods Anglican Church.

Thomas E. Smith, Postmaster, Gilby, Grand Forks Co., ND appointed 15 Nov 1913.

Marriage Certificate to Mary A. Gile in file.

Parents were Charles Knowlton Smith and Lauretta H. Lyon.
