When Parkinson John Smith was born on April 10, 1870, in Cumberland, Nova Scotia, Canada, his father, John C Smith, was 36 and his mother, Hannah E Ripley, was 31. He married Grace Amelia Clendenning on April 13, 1907, in Montréal, Quebec, Canada. [1] They had six children in 11 years. He died on August 28, 1925, in Springhill, Nova Scotia, Canada, at the age of 55, and was buried in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada

Military Service

17 Dec 1915 - 106th Overseas Battalion, C.E.F[6] Parkinson John enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force on December 17, 1915, and served overseas in WW1, first in the 6th Battalion, then in the 106th Overseas Battalion. He was discharged on June 13, 1918.

Death

Parkinson passed away in 28 Aug 1925 at Springhill, Cumberland Co, Nova Scotia. [7]

August 28, 1925. Funeral of the Late Parkinson Smith

The funeral of the late Parkinson Smith, who died so suddenly in the mine of Springhill of Friday night, took place from the home of his brother, Laurie, Croft Street, yesterday afternoon. Rev. Mr. Bartlett of Trinity United Church, of which church the deceased was a member, head charge of the service, which was largely attended. Mr. Bartlett delivered a short address and several selections of music were rendered by the choir. After the service at the house, the remains were taken to West Amherst cemetery where interment was made. The pall bearers were four members of the United Mine Workers, Springhill and two members of the Oddfellow Lodge, Amherst, Messers. M. A. Hanson and T. Forgraves. The funeral director was T. S. Furlong, who brought the body from Springhill.

There were many beautiful floral offerings including the following: Wreath - wife and family; Spray - mother, brothers, and sisters; Pillow - Mrs. R. F. Milner and family; Wreath - Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Bryenton, Mrs. Grace Eagles; Spray - Mr. and Mrs. Milton Flett; Cut Flowers - Mr. and Mrs. Sears; Cross - Mr. and Mrs. Tilman LeBlanc; Pillow - Mr. and Mrs. T. Burgess; Cut Flowers - Trinity United Church; Cut Flowers - Miss LeBlanc; Wreath - Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Fullerton and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Cole, Springhill; Cut Flowers - Miss Ina Freeman; Three Links - Ivy Lodge I. O. O. F.; Spray - Miss Mildred Tower; Spray - Mr. and Mrs. Edward Sears.

The wife and family would like to thank all the friends who assisted them during their trying hour, and particularly the United Mine Workers and Oddfellows of Springhill, and Oddfellows of Amherst. A brother Walter in Boston was unable to get to the funeral on account of not receiving the telegram in time.

- Springhill

The death of Mr. Parkinson Smith of Amherst, an employee of the Dominion Coal Co. of this town occurred on Friday evening in No. 10 Incline East 59, No. 2 Slope. The remains were taken to Amherst on Saturday evening by Undertaker Furlong of Amherst. (Note: It is believed that John Parkinson Smith died of a heart attack)
