Biography

Leo Smith was living in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon, when he was enumerated on the 1910 Census. He was identified as being born in Nebraska, father born in Pennsylvania, mother born in Illinois. His was working as a laborer in an Iron Works in Portland[1]

Leo Smith wrote that he was born on 11 May 1890 in St Libory, Nebraska, when he registered for the WWI draft on 5 Jun 1917 in Metolius, Oregon. He was described by the registrar as tall and slender with blue eyes and dark hair.[2]

On 30 Jan 1920, Leo L. (29), wife Marie (23), and their five month old son Lewis H. were living on a rented farm in Metolius precinct, Jefferson County, Oregon.[3]

Leo was back in Portland working as a laborer when the 1930 Census enumeration took place, though there is no indication who he worked for. Living with him were wife Marie (33), son Lewis (10), and sister Elizabeth (27). Elizabeth Smith's occupation was listed as "graduate nurse, hospital."[4]

By 1940, Leo (age 49) had moved his family to Rogue River, Jackson County, Oregon, where he was the proprietor of a feed store. They were renting a home at 51 Broadway Street for $12/month. Leo told the enumerator that he had worked 52 weeks in the previous year, earning $1,080, making him the highest earning person on his page of the census, excluding CCC Camp staff. The column indicating whether he was working for wages or on his own account is heavily marked over, making it unclear whether he was the principle or a manager in the store. His wife is identified as Mary B (age 43) who did not work outside the home. Their son Lewis Henry (age 20 divorced) was living with the couple while working as a laborer in the logging industry. Lewis had only worked 16 weeks in 1939 and was not working the last week of March 1940; his father indicated he was seeking work. All three lived in rural Jefferson County, Oregon, in 1935.[5]

Research Notes

  • Who was Elizabeth (age 33) living with Leo and Marie Smith in 1930?
  • Elizabeth is presumed to be Leo's sister and not Marie's because the places of birth identified for her and her parents (Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Illinois) are consistent with those of Leo's family. Marie's places of birth are completely different (Wisconsin Germany, Germany). McGee-1611 23:13, 25 May 2016 (EDT)
  • When and who did Lewis Henry Smith marry; when did they divorce; were there any children?
