Squire Smith is said to have been working on a cattle boat traveling on the Mississippi River and in 1849 contracted cholera and died. It is unknown exactly where he died or where he is buried. There was in fact a cholera outbreak in 1849 affecting towns along the Mississippi river. Lucretia Thomas Squire and her three young children went to live with her parents Isaac and Mary Poly Watts Thomas in Bond County, Illinois. They appear on the 1850 census record. The names and marriages of the three daughters of Squire and Lucretia are followed.
