Obituary

Charles Alvin Smith, 86, of Lower Burrell, went to be with his Savior on Thursday, April 8, 2010, in his home, surrounded by his loving wife and children. He was born Nov. 25, 1923, in Tarentum, a son of the late Albert Sr. and Ellen Lescalett Smith. He lived in the Alle-Kiski Valley all his life. He attended and graduated from Tarentum High School. Charles was a self-employed carpenter and owned and operated Smith's Wood Shop, Lower Burrell. Charles' first love was for his Lord and Savior. He loved ministering. Charles also enjoyed gardening and loved spending time with his family. Charles served during World War II in the Navy on the USS Scott Destroyer in Europe and the Pacific. Charles was an active member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church, New Kensington, and Lazarus Tomb and Lighthouse Ministries Missions, both of Arnold. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Albert "Bill" Smith Jr. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, June Cipul Smith; son, Kevin Smith; two daughters, Deborah (Thomas) Schaeffer and Carol (Robert) Callender, all of Lower Burrell; four sisters, Merle Truver, of Lake Jackson, Texas, Arlene Krause, of Buffalo Center, Iowa, Myrtle Langham, of Michigan, and Betty Wescott, of Phoenix, Ariz.; grandchildren, Melanie (James) Hartman, of Harrisburg, Brock and Dugan Smith, of Tarentum, Jessalin Callender, of Apollo, Jaron Callender, of Great Lakes Naval Station, Chicago, Ill., and Casey Callender, of New Kensington; and special friends, the Rev. Steve and Rebecca Gabor, of Arnold. Family and friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the JOSEPH J. CARDARO FUNERAL HOME, New Kensington. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home with the Rev. George Beattie, pastor of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell.
