Biography

Elizabeth was born in about 1851. On one of her marriage documents, Elizabeth lists her birthplace as Wainfleet Township, while on the other she lists Chippewa.[1] By the time that she was ten,[2] her family had moved to Norfolk county, where she seems to have spent the rest of her life.
In 1876, she gave birth to a son, William Smith. No father is listed on the birth certificate.[3] Two years after this, she married William Watts, a widower from London, England, who was already in his late fifties.[4] Elizabeth would have two children with William: Rosa May in 1880 and John in 1883. William seems to have disappeared by the 1891 census. At that time, Elizabeth and her three children are living with Cyrus Andrews in the town of Simcoe. She is listed as Elizabeth Andrews, married to Cyrus.[5] But this seems unlikely. Despite the fact that she and Cyrus had a child named Cyrus, born in 1896,[6] by the 1901 census, Cyrus is gone and she is living with her four children, listed as Elizabeth Watts, widow.[7] In 1904, Elizabeth married another widower, Harry Lambert.,[8] By 1911, all of her children had left home, and she was living in the town of Simcoe with Harry. Her widowed father Oliver was staying with them.[9]
Elizabeth died in 1942 and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Simcoe, Ontario.[10]

  1. Chippewa is where her great grandfather, Henry Ribble, originally settled, when he brought his family from New Jersey to Canada before the War of 1812. After the war, Henry moved his family to Elgin County where Malahide Township is located. But by the time Elizabeth was born, her grandfather, Anthony Ribble had returned to the Niagara area and was settled in Wainfleet. This was likely where she was born.
