Biography

Florence Smith was born in 1888 in Attercliffe, Yorkshire, England to Henry Smith and Margaret (Bennett) Smith. Her birth was registered in Sheffield, Yorkshire in the second quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Bennett.^[1]

Florence's father passed away in 1889.

In 1891 Florence Smith (age 3) lived in Darnall, Yorkshire with her widowed mother Margarett (40), sister Emily (9), brother Alfred (7), and two lodgers: Jasper Tipple (27, General Labourer) and Charlie Crawford (24, General Labourer).^[2]

In 1901 Florence Smith (age 13) lived in Yorkshire with her mother Margaret (50), two brothers: William (20, Railway Clerk) and Alfred (17, General Labourer Iron Works), cousin Stella Longthorne (2), and boarder James Scott (26, Railway Porter).^[3]
