Nelson Evening Mail, Volume LIV, 27 September 1920, Page 4
MR APPO HOCTON
The death occurred at the residence of his son yesterday, after a short illness, of Mr Appo Hocton, in his 101 st year. Deceased was one or Nelson’s earliest settlers, having arrived in the emigrant ship Thomas Harrison in February, 1842—78 years ago. Born in China in 1820, Air Hocton went to London at the age of about 14, and afterwards visited various parts of the world in the capacity of cabin-boy and steward. Upon arriving in Nelson Mr Hocton gave up the sea and lived in the city until 1876, when he took up land in the Dovedale district and had remained there ever since, living with his son Mr Louis Hocton. Throughout his long life, Mr Hocton had never had a though he had had several accidents. Almost up to the time of his death the aged settler was able to get about, and was last in the city seven months back and up to a year ago was able to transact all his own business. He had a fairly good recollection of events, and was able to recall incidents of the early days. While the Prince of Wales was in New Zealand a photograph of Mr Hocton was sent to him. and an acknowledgment was received from His Royal Highness, who congratulated Mr Hocton on attaining such a great age.
