Biography

Bessie B. Snow was born on March 25, 1901 in her parents' farm near Barkley, Jasper County, Indiana, USA. She was the daughter of Theodore Wilson Snow, b: July 22, 1861, in Jasper County, Indiana; and his wife, Ada V. (Henkle) Snow, also of Jasper Co., Indiana. Her Snow heritage goes back to Ashford, Windham County, Connecticut, where her great grandfather was Lovell Snow, b: 1773 in Ashford, Connecticut Colony.[1][2]

The 1910 US Census reported "Bessie B. Snow," 9 years old, living with her 48 and 45-year-old parents in Barkley, Jasper Co., Indiana. They had been married 25 years (ca. 1885) and Ada (Henkle) Snow reported having had 10 children, of whom 9 were still living in 1910. Their household in 1910 included 7 children: Bessie B. Snow and 3 brothers (Asa: 19; Harvey: 12; Archie J: 1 yr. old), plus 2 older sisters (Eva: 19; Rhoda: 14) and also a 2-year-old grandson: Jessie W. Snow, born in Illinois. Theodore W. Snow owned his mortgaged "general farm" and was said to be "working for himself," not an employee. His parents were born in Ohio as was Ada's father; her mother was from Kentucky. [3]

Ten years later, in January 1920, the next US Census reported "Bessie Snow," 19 years old, still living with her parents on their farm in Barkley, Jasper County, Indiana. She was one their five children who still remained at home, with 4 sons: "Acie:" 30; Harvey: 22; "Elsa:" 15, & "Archie:" 11 years old. Theodore's occupation was still "Farmer" and his 2 older sons were now "Farm Laborers" on their family farm.[4] [5]

Bessie Snow married Edward Fay (aka Fay Edward) Haskell in 1922 in Chicago Heights, Cook County, Illinois. The couple lived in Chicago Heights near her brothers, Elza and Archie, and had at least 2 children:

  1. Anita Haskell, b: 1922 in Chicago Heights, Cook, Illinois
  2. Robert Haskell, b: 6 Oct 1924 in Chicago Heights, Cook, Illinois

Bessie B. (Snow) Haskell was mistakenly called "Tessie" on the 1930 US Census report for Chicago Heights, Illinois, but her tombstone reads "Bessie B. Haskell" and that was her given name. [6]

No records were found for Bessie B. (Snow) Haskell between 1940 and 1961.

Fay E. Haskell died December 20, 1961 in Illinois and was buried in the Skyline Memorial Park, Monee, Will County, Illinois, USA. His wife, Bessie (Snow) Haskell, survived his passing for more than 35 more years. She died in Monee, Wills, Illinois, in 1998 at 97 years old. She was buried next to her husband in the Skyline Memorial Park in Monee, Illinois. [7] [8]
