Jabez Smith Snow, Sr., was born in July 1860, on his parents' farm in Campbell County, Virginia. He was the couple's middle child (of 3) and only son. His parents were Jabez Snow and Parthenia (Hughes) Snow, married in March 1852, in Campbell Co., Virginia. Like so many other of Virginia's men, aged between 18 and 50, Jabez Snow enlisted to defend his state in the American Civil War; and like so many others, he failed to come home at the end of the bloody conflict, leaving his wife a young widow with 3 small children to raise. As did many of her peers, Parthenia (Hughes) Snow proved to be made from "strong stuff," and she successfully organized the Snow family farm, hiring young neighbors when needed, helped by all of her children with strong family, neighbors and local church support.
The 1870 US Federal Census shows widowed Parthenia (Hughes) Snow as "head of household" with her 3 children:
The 1880 Census shows the same trio living in Parthenia (Hughes) Snow's household, now in Pigg River, Pittsylvania County, Virginia.
On Nov. 18, 1891 Jabez Smith Snow, Sr., wed Susan Hart Pannill, b: July 29, 1868, in Virginia. They were married in Culpeper County, Virginia.
The couple had 6 children:
By the 1930 US Federal census, Jabez S. Snow, Sr., and his wife were living in Charlottesville, Virginia. He died there on March 25, 1940, and is buried at the Oakwood Cemetery, Charlottesville, Charlottesville City, Virginia, USA; Plot: 6. His wife survived him. She died on March 1, 1942, in Charlottesville, Virginia. She is buried beside her husband and 4 of their children at Oakwood Cemetery in Charlottesville VA. [1]
Originally: "They had several children, including Clara D 1892, Nannie Jordon 1894, Jabez Smith Jr. 1897, and Punlet P. 1903. Birth, death per Findagrave index." [NOTE: I could not locate "Nannie Jordon" Snow or "Punlet P." Snow... it turns out "Punlet" was really "Robert Porter Snow" - misread on 1930 Census. Nannie (Nancy) Jordan Snow was on the 1900 Census but not 1910; died 1900-10. No burial site found so likely died as an infant - no burial site found.].
