Biography

Benjamin was born about 1775, probably in Pennsylvania or Germany.

He is likely the Benjamin Snyder who appears in the 1800 census in Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Christian Snyder, Henry Snyder, and Andrew Snider also listed on same page.

In 1820, Benjamin Snyder is listed in Hempfield, Westmoreland Co, Pennsylvania as 45 years old or older (indicating a birth of 1775 or earlier). His wife is also 45 years or older.

Children listed with Benjamin in the 1820 census:

One son under ten (born between 1810 and 1820): Probably Benjamin Snyder, Jr. (b. 1814).

One daughter under ten (born between 1810 and 1820): Probably Susannah Snyder (b. 1812).

Two sons age 10 to 16 (born between 1804-1810): Probably Jacob Snyder (b. 1806) and Henry Snyder (born 1808).

Two daughters from age 10 to 16 (born between 1804-1810): Probably Christina (b. 1810) and another unknown daughter.

Other Snyder households living in Hempfield in 1820 were those of Christopher Snyder, Adam Snyder, "Widow Snyder," Peter Snyder, and Jacob Snyder.

In the 1840 Census, Benjamin Snyder was listed as being between 60 & 70 years old, living in Lexington, Stark County, Ohio. His wife is not named, but she is listed as being between 70 and 80 years old. There is another male, aged 15-20.

Next door neighbors in 1840 were Benjamin Hamlin (husband of Susannah Snyder) and Jacob Snyder (age 30-40). There’s also a Henry Snyder (30-40) on same page. I think it is likely that Henry and Jacob are Benjamin Snyder's sons.

Benjamin is mentioned in an 1899 biographical account of his grand-daughter Mary (Acker) Wannamaker Farmer:

"Mrs. Farmer's parents, George and Christina (Snyder) Acker, were both born in Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania. They were married in that State, and had a family of five children: Jerry, Henry, John, Mary A. and Susan. The mother of these died in 1828, and in 1833 Mr. Acker wedded Catherine Delp, of Pennsylvania, by whom he had eleven children: George D., Christian, Daniel, Andrew, Sarah, Savilla, Margaret, Thomas, Ellen, William and Warren. The father, who was a lifelong carpenter by trade, passed from earth Oct. 9, 1868; his widow, now eighty-three years old, is still living in Fostoria, Ohio. Benjamin Snyder, Mrs. Farmer's grandfather, was born in Pennsylvania, whence he moved to Stark county, Ohio, where he died in 1864 at the age of seventy-one years....."

(Note: I believe the age at death of Benjamin Snyder given in this article is inaccurate. It indicates a birth year of 1793, but the 1840 U.S. census says Benjamin was born between 1770 and 1780.)

Snyder-13350 and Snyder-5237 appear to represent the same person because: In the 1840 Census, Benjamin Snyder was listed as being between 60 & 70 years old, living in Lexington, Stark County, Ohio. His wife is not named, but she is listed as being between 70 and 80 years old. Next door neighbors were Benjamin Hamlin (husband of Benjamin Snyder's daughter Susannah) and Jacob Snyder (age 30-40). There’s also a Henry Snyder (30-40) on same page. I think it is likely that Henry and Jacob are Benjamin Snyder's sons. They are of the right age, and were also born in Pennsylvania.
