Biography

John was born in 1871.^[1] at his marriage in 1903 his parents were recorded as Hans Holback and Maren Sophia Sorenson, nee ANDERSON.^[2]

WESTERN STAR, 5 DECEMBER 1922, PAGE 4 An interesting find in the shape of a fairly complete skeleton of a moa was made during the week by Mr J. H. Sorensen while working his goldmining claim at Falls Creek (says the Orepuki ‘Advocate’). The bones were unearthed at a point some twenty feet below the surface, pointing to the conclusion that hundreds of years must have elapsed since the gigantic bipod roamed the locality.[3]

He passed away in 1961 aged 90 years^[4]

He is buried in the Orepuki Cemetery, Orepuki, Southland[4]^[5]
