Fanny Bowman Southgate was born on the 19 August 1837 at King Street, in the Settlement of Milton, east of the Town of Gravesend, District of Gravesend in Kent, England[1]. Her baptism took place on the 3 September 1837 at the Parish Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, East Milton Road, in the Town of Gravesend, Parish of Milton-next-Gravesend, in Kent, England[2]. She is the daughter of Francis Southgate and Harriet Harris.
In 1841, Fanny (3) lived with parents Francis (45) and Harriet (45); siblings Francis (20), Harriet (20), Ellen (15), Frederick (15) and Kate (3); Ann (15) and Helen (Morris) (12); Solicitor, Munery (Johnson) (20) and Servants, Jane (Cook) (50), Eleanor (Snelling) (20) and Emily (Bacon) (20). Their home was located at King Street, in the Settlement of Milton, east of the Town of Gravesend, District of Gravesend in Kent, England[3]. However, in 1851, at the age of 13, Fanny was a pupil at a School, located at The Street, in the Village of East Peckham, on the River Medway, in the Parish of Wateringbury, District of Malling, in Kent, England[4].
Then, in 1861, now 23, Fanny is back living with her parents Francis (69) and Harriet (66); siblings, Solicitor Francis (41) and Harriet (39) and Servants, Cook, Ann (Harris (57), Housemaid, Kate (Phee) (26) and Footman, George (Edwards) (19) at Courteny House, Rosherville Square, in Rosherville, Northfleet, adjacent to Gravesend, in the District of North Aylesford, Kent, England[5].
Fanny married John George Slade on the 8 October 1867 at the Parish Church of St. Botolph, The Hill, in the Town of Northfleet, District of North Aylesford, in the Borough of Gravesham, Kent, England. John was single, 39 years old and worked as the Colonial Secretary at St. Marks, Rosherville, Northfleet. Frances "Fanny" was 28 years old and also lived in Northfleet and they were married by Licence by Vicar, Frederic (Southgate), Fanny's brother. Her father was solicitor, Francis (Southgate) and witnesses were Francis (Southgate) and Charles (Slade), presumably the fathers of the couple[6][7].
[8]MARRIAGES. SLADE—SOUTHGATE.—On the 8th inst., at the parish church of St. Botolph, Northfleet, by the Rev. Frederic Southgate, vicar, brother of the bride, John George Slade, Esq., of Rosherville, Northfleet, to Fanny Bowman, the youngest daughter of Francis Southgate, Esq., of Rosherville[9].
The couple had (at least) seven (7) children during their marriage. John died in 1886, and Fanny continued living in the Colony of Western Australia in Contonment Road, Fremantle, after his death[10]. However, on the 2 January 1909, Fanny and a single daughter, boarded the coastal vessel "Riverina" at the Port of Fremantle, Western Australia. The "Riverina" was bound for the City of Sydney, New South Wales, arriving there on the 30 January 1909[11]. On the 5 May 1920, Fanny "Frances Beaumont" passed away in the Town of Lowood, in the Somerset Region, on the Brisbane River, 66 km (41mi) from the Capital City of Brisbane, in the State of Queensland, Australia[12]. Her burial took place on the 6 May 1920 at Lowood General Cemetery, Clarendon Road, near the Town of Lowood, Somerset Region, Queensland, Australia[13].
