Richard Henry Sowden was born on 12 Jul 1872 in Plymouth, Devon, England to Richard Sowden and Mary Jane (Blatchford) Sowden. His birth was registered in Plymouth in the third quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Blatchford.^[1]

Richard Henry Sowden, born 12 Jul 1872, son of Richard, a boot rivetter, & Mary Jane, residing at 12 Nelson Street, was christened on 26 Jul 1872 in the parish of Charles, Plymouth.^[2]

Richard's father passed away in 1874. His mother remarried in 1876, to the widower John Payne.

Richard and his family emigrated to Australia in 1876:

• Richd Payne [Sowden] (3), with his stepfather John (39), mother Mary J (39 [~44]), two stepsisters: Rose (6) and Lilly (4), sister Ellen [Sowden] (6), and half-sister Alice (infant), sailed aboard the ship Duntrune, which departed from Plymouth on 6 Sep 1876 and arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia on 29 Nov 1876.^[3]
