Contents

Hawaii

Hawaii is the official state name (encompassing all islands) and is used on government documents.

There are categories for historic Hawaii, now all placed under Category:Hawaii History:

There is a 5 year gap between Kingdom of Hawaii and Hawaii Territory, which corresponds to the Republic of Hawaii.

Hawaii Counties

Hawaii has 5 counties:

  1. Hawaiʻi County
  2. Honolulu County
  3. Kalawao County
  4. Kauaʻi County
  5. Maui County

For the counties which include an okina (Kauai and Hawaii): The United States Board on Geographic Names lists relevant place names both with and without the ʻokina and kahakō (macron) in the Geographic Names Information System. Colloquially and formally, the forms have long been used interchangeably. (Per Wikipedia).

It has been decided, for simplicity, to use county names without diacritics.

In consequence, the names of county categories should be:

  1. Hawaii County, Hawaii
  2. Honolulu County, Hawaii
  3. Kalawao County, Hawaii
  4. Kauai County, Hawaii
  5. Maui County, Hawaii

Hawaii Municipalities

All location categories for cities, towns, villages, or other municipalities should be named without diacritics.

Example: [[Category:Kapaa, Hawaii]]

Hawaii Cemeteries

Cemetery group categories (cemeteries by county) should follow the spelling adopted for the corresponding county categories. If the official name of the cemetery (confirmed by local signage) includes diacritics, they may be used in the cemetery name part of the category name.
