  1. Use FamilySearch.com for FREE to find sources
  2. Check FamilySearch.com for marriage, birth, military, estate, sources. Cut and paste the citation
  3. Check for tombstones using Find a Grave.com to search for tombstone birth and death dates and cemetery location, if you know the county where the were buried. Use the {{FindAGrave|########|date viewed}} as a source in the profile.
  4. if they lived in the US between 1850 and 1940 there is almost always a Census record for them into the sources section.
  5. Do a Google search to see if there are any books written about the family or the region where the family lived. Many older books are public domain without copyright restrictions. You may also come across online genealogies. Be cautious of this information unless it contains original sources, such as Census, marriage, will, or land records.
  6. After adding the source citations to the profile, you may want to write a story about the person from what you have learned, list their parents, spouse, and children in the profile. You will be surprised what you will discover from doing this. The Census also tells you where they were born and their occupation, among other things.
