Purpose

This page describes how Categories are used by the US Southern Colonies Project, and provides guidance on their use.

Help

Before diving in, see Help:Categorization to learn how categories are used within WikiTree, and Help:Categorization Glossary for categorization terms and advanced topics.

Two categorization terms are used extensively below and important to understand:

  • High Level Category - is used to group other categories. It will often carry a legend that Person Profiles should not be added to the high level category, but rather to a subcategory.
  • Landing Level Category - is a category far enough down the category tree that it is expected to contain primarily Person Profiles rather than being used to group together several narrower categories.

To view the category hierarchy, on any category page (e.g. US Southern Colonies Project), click the [Navigate] link in the upper-right corner of the page.

The US Southern Colonies Categories Team supports the Project and individual WikiTreers by keeping the Project's categories in good order, providing guidance on their use, and generating documentation like this page. Please visit the Categories Team page if you need assistance, or to provide feedback or suggestions.

Introduction

Project-related Categories, Pages, and Person Profiles are organized under the Project's high level Category:

which has four primary project level Subcategories:

and four supporting project level Subcategories:

The table below shows the relationship between the 7 colonies and the Colonists and Colonies categories, as well as the Project Teams working each. Note that the Colonists (persons) categories are in a separate hierarchy from the Colonies (locations) categories.

The Project's high level category and the 7 project level subcategories are described in the Primary Categories, and Supporting Categories sections below.

Primary Categories

US Southern Colonies Project

Category:US Southern Colonies Project | [Navigate] | High Level
This is the high level category for project-related Categories and Pages. This is a high level category, and should have no Person Profiles.
All of the Person Profiles currently (9 Jun 2021) assigned to this category should be reviewed to see whether the category may be removed, or the category changed to Category:US Southern Colonies Project Members.

US Southern Colonies (Locations)

Category:US Southern Colonies | [Navigate] | High Level
This high level category and its 7 high level, colony level Colonies subcategories are used to group county/district/municipality level location subcategories.
The landing level, county/district/municipality level location subcategories are then used to group Person Profiles in the locations the person was born, lived, married, and died.

County/district/municipality level location subcategories are assigned to Person Profiles with the Categorize button in the profile editor, or assigned manually, e.g.:
[[Category:New Kent County, Virginia Colony]]
Many location categories may be appropriate for your ancestor's profile. For example, perhaps your ancestor arrived in Virginia and initially settled in Jamestown, then moved to Charles City County, Virginia, then to Charles County, Maryland, then back to Virginia, where he was living in King and Queen County when he died. It would be appropriate to add:
Project-related Pages pertinent to the colonies and locations within them may be assigned to these county/district/municipality level location subcategories as well.
There is also a WikiTree (not project level) Migration category and Migrating Ancestor template for adding locations related to emigration and immigration.
See these categories and pages for detailed information:

US Southern Colonists (Persons)

Category:US Southern Colonists | [Navigate] | High Level
This high level category contains 7 colony level Colonists subcategories used by Project Teams to find and watch over Person Profiles within their scope. It also contains the US Southern Colonies Family Studies category.
One or more colony level Colonists categories may be assigned to Person Profiles within the scope of the Project—"those born or settled in the colonies of Maryland, Virginia, the Carolinas and Georgia prior to 1776."[1]
Virginia Colonists (Landing Level)
Jamestown Colonists (Landing Level)
Maryland Colonists (Landing Level)
Carolina Colonists (Landing Level)
North Carolina Colonists (Landing Level)
South Carolina Colonists (Landing Level)
Georgia Colonists (Landing Level)
Generally, you would only add one colony level Colonists (persons) category, while you might add multiple Colonies (locations) categories to cover all of the locations where the person resided over their life.
See the Project Box and Project Sticker section below for instructions to add these categories with the project box or project sticker. Alternatively, these categories may be assigned to Person Profiles manually.

US Southern Colonists Adjunct (Persons)

Category:US Southern Colonists Adjunct | [Navigate] | Landing Level
This landing level category is used by the Managed Profiles Team to find and watch over Adjunct Person Profiles.

US Southern Colonies, Uncertain Existence (Persons)

Category:US Southern Colonies, Uncertain Existence | [Navigate] | Landing Level
This landing level category is used by Project Teams to find and watch over Person Profiles of uncertain existence.
This category and the uncertain existence category may also be assigned to a profile by adding a parameter to the uncertain existence template:
{{Uncertain Existence|US Southern Colonies}}

Supporting Categories

US Southern Colonies Family Studies

Category:US Southern Colonies Family Studies | [Navigate] | Landing Level
This landing level category may be assigned to WikiTree free-space Pages presenting studies of individual US Southern Colonists and their families.
The Project does not need to be a Profile Manager of the free-space pages in this category, but it is recommended.

US Southern Colonies Project Maintenance Categories

Category:US Southern Colonies Project Maintenance Categories | [Navigate] | High Level
This is a high level project category for project maintenance Categories and Pages. Maintenance categories group Person Profiles in need of some particular type of work, and serve as to-do lists for projects. Such a profile therefore "needs" work.
See Category:US Southern Colonies Project Maintenance Categories for the most up-to-date list of project maintenance categories.
See Space:US Southern Colonies Project Maintenance Categories for a detailed description of each category, syntax, and steps to add or remove a category.
Have a suggestion for a new maintenance category? Please post a comment to the US Southern Colonies Categories Team page (not this page).

Who works on profiles in the maintenance categories? Just about everyone, especially for profiles in the Needs Extensive Work category!
See US Southern Colonies Project Maintenance Categories By Team for the Project Teams that work each maintenance category.

US Southern Colonies Project Members

Category:US Southern Colonies Project Members | [Navigate] | Landing Level
US Southern Colonies Project Members may assign this landing level category to their own Person Profile. The category is assigned automatically by the project member sticker:
{{Member|Southern Colonies}}

US Southern Colonies Reliable Sources

Category:US Southern Colonies Reliable Sources | [Navigate] | High Level
This is a high level project category for Reliable Sources pages.

Inactive Categories

A few inactive categories also appear under the Project's high level category, and can be ignored:

Project Boxes and Project Sticker

Person Profiles within the scope of the Project are identified with one of two project boxes or the project sticker.

The project box will be assigned to all project-managed Person Profiles. The project box automatically assigns the profile to a colony level Colonists category based on the colony parameter.

{{US Southern Colonist|colony}}
where colony is one of: Virginia, Jamestown, Maryland, Carolina, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia

The adjunct project box will be assigned to all project-managed Adjunct Person Profiles. The adjunct project box does not have the colony parameter.

{{US Southern Colonist Adjunct}}

The project sticker may be assigned to any Person Profile within the scope of the Project. The project sticker automatically assigns the profile to a colony level Colonists category based on the colony parameter.

{{US Southern Colonist Sticker|colony}}
where colony is one of: Virginia, Jamestown, Maryland, Carolina, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia

The colony parameter is a required parameter for both the project box and project sticker. If the colony parameter is mistakenly omitted, the project box and project sticker automatically assign the profile to the US Southern Colonists category. The profile will need to be edited to assign a colony parameter.

As an alternative to adding the project sticker, you may manually assign the profile to a colony level Colonists category. If you remove the project sticker but wish the Person Profile to remain under the watch of the Project, remember to add the colony level Colonists category manually.

Colonies Timeline

The US Southern Colonies Project covers "the colonies of Maryland, Virginia, the Carolinas and Georgia prior to 1776."[1] For the purposes of WikiTree, the colonies ended 4 July 1776.

For the purposes of categorization, the following dates/events are used by the Project.

The Colony of Virginia was chartered in 1606, was transferred to royal authority as a crown colony in 1624, and existed until 1776. Jamestown Colony was settled in 1607, and the last Jamestown muster was performed in January 1624/5.

The Province of Maryland existed from 1632 until 1776.

The Province of Carolina existed from 1663 until 1712, and was then partitioned into The Province of North Carolina and The Province of South Carolina in 1712. The Province of North Carolina and The Province of South Carolina then each existed from 1712 to 1776.

The Province of Georgia existed from 1732 to 1776.

Rationale

This section documents Project discussion and decisions affecting the use of Categories by the Project.

2020-Sep—Colony level location categories top level or mid level
This question was posed to the Colonial Teams (sent via the US Southern Colonies' Discussion Google Group and posted to the Teams page):

Should the colony level location category be top level (no Person Profiles) or mid level across the board or as determined by each Colonial Team and, if a top level category, what to do about the Person Profiles with no information to indicate a county or a district?

Answers received were for top level, meaning no Person Profiles in the colony level subcategories. The question of what to do with profiles of persons without more specific location information didn't have a clear answer, but adding them to the "needs=Location Research" project maintenance category would be a start.
