Ruth was the oldest of the three children of John Montgomry Speidel and Esther Vestal Leech. According to an obituary attached to Find-a-Grave Memorial 127177956, she was a registered nurse who in October 1943 passed U.S. Army Air Corps certification as a flight nurse. She entered the USAAC in November 1943 and served until 1946, being discharged as a 1st Lieutenant. She served in England and Scotland during World War II, and was the first flight nurse to fly to Germany when Allied Forces crossed the Rhine Rhiver; she nursed and escorted soldiers evacuated from the battlefield, and escorted soldiers to hospitals in the United States. The obituary said that she left two surviving children: "Pat Penn and Bob Penn." Ruth is buried is Section 35 of Ft. Logan National Cemetery, Denver County, CO.
