Biography

John Speirs was born around 1860, the son of Jean (Armstrong) Speirs and John Speirs.

He married Amelia Jane Pascoe in 1899 in Victoria, Australia.^[1] Their children were:^[2]

John died on 2 December 1938 in Heathcote, Victoria, aged 78 years.^[4][5] His remains were buried at Brighton General Cemetery in Melbourne, Victoria.^[6]

   Mr. John Speirs, of Toolleen, near Bendigo, one of the pioneers of the district, died yesterday. He was aged 78 years. Mr. Speirs left his home about 3 p.m. for a walk, and his body was found in a paddock by his son Donald, who searched for him when he did not return. His dog was standing guard over him. It is believed that he suffered a heart seizure.
   Mr, Speirs had extensive pastoral interests and he established the Toolleen Hotel. For 21 years he was a member of the Waranga Council, and was prcsident for three terms.
   The funeral will take place at the Brighton Cemetery on Monday.
