Magnus SPENCE was born Aug 9, 1857 in Mapleton, the eldest son of Sarah BIRSTON & Jacob SPENCE (1830-1906). He undoubtedly was named Magnus after his maternal grandfather, Magnus BIRSTON (1811-1875).
His father Jacob “Jake” SPENCE was born on June 16, 1830 in Mapleton, the youngest child of a Cree woman and George SPENCE (1773-1859) from the Orkneys of Scotland, one of the first settlers in Mapleton as described in the above Introduction.
His grandfather George SPENCE was probably born around 1773 (S&F) in the Orkneys of Scotland. Around 1807-1810 George began a life-long relationship with a Cree woman named Catherine (some references indicate her Cree name was TCHI-TCHIT.
Nov 17, 1877 he obtained a land grant (perhaps a Homestead Grant) for a 240 acre property located a few miles north of Tyndall.
1881 Census he is listed as a farmer, living with wife and son Robert. [1]
On Jan 6, 1891 Magnus SPENCE died. He was only 33 years old In his March 16th, 1891 Probate Record he is documented with $660 of assets. [2]
