16 February 1916, Erwin enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces; Service number: 6114. He was assigned to the 58th Battalion and then 19 Rnfts. 6th Infantry Battalion and attained the rank of Private^[3]. He passed away on board the troop ship, H.M.A.T. Themistocles of Meningitis on 17 August 1916 and was buried at sea.

He is remembered on a plaque at Hollybrook War Memorial, Southampton, Southampton Unitary Authority, Hampshire, England^[4]
