Biography

Max was born in 1868 (possibly 1866) in Russia (sometimes given as Poland). He married Jennie Drost/Drust (1872-1945) in his home country.

They were the parents of at least the following children before Max emigrated to settle in Boston, Massachusetts in 1903:

Esther Spiegel 1895-1974
Abraham Spiegel 1898-
David Spiegel 1901-
Mollie (Helen M.) Spiegel 1903-1992

Jennie and the four children came to Boston in 1907. They had two more children:

Louis Spiegel 1908-1984
Harry Spiegel 1912-2004

Max was a shoemaker. He is recorded in 1910 living on Genesee St. in Boston; he was 42, born in Russia, with wife Jennie, 40, married 19 years, who was the mother of 6 children still living. There were only five children living with them, plus a boarder, Harry Saveig, 26, also born in Russia. All but Louis were born in Russia and spoke Yiddish. He and Jennie probably became naturalized citizens later that year. He is also recorded paying tax as a cobbler and living on Genesee St. 1912-1914.

In 1920 Max was living on Compton St. in Boston. He was a cobbler with his own shop, 52, born in Polish Russia, speaking the Jewish language, with wife Jennie 50 and children Esther, Abraham, Molly, Louis and Harry. Louis and Harry were born in MA, the rest all in Polish Russia.

He passed away in 1927. He is buried in Anshe Poland Cemetery in Woburn, Middlesex MA.

Research Notes

There is an immigration for a Max Spiegel in 1909 but this is not believed to be him. Jenny had 6 children still living in 1910 but only 5 are listed, this seems to indicate a firstborn child who was not with the family. Jennie's obituary in 1945 mentions 4 living sons and 2 daughters. One of the sons was Edward, who was either the firstborn and Abraham had died, or was Abraham's alternate/middle name. David, Harry and Louis all had military service.

Possible naturalization record in 1910:

Death record and obituary still needed.
