Biography

Robert Leachman Spindle was born on 30 Nov 1840 near Sudley in Prince William County, Virginia, the son of James Addison Spindle and Sarah Jane Pridmore.[1] Robert was named for Baptist Elder Robert C. Leachman, who baptized some of James Addison & Sarah Jane Pridmore Spindle's children, including Robert Leachman Spindle.

Robert's father died in 1860 and in 1861 Robert owned, with his mother, 5 horses, 6 cattle, 14 hogs, and 1 clock.

He voted for secession at Centreville on 23 Apr 1861. On 1 Oct 1863, he enlisted at Scuffleburg, Fauquier County, Virginia, as a private in Co. B, 43rd Batallion, Mosby's Virginia Cavalry (Partisan Rangers), in the Confederate army.[2] He was captured by Union forces on 10 Jun 1864 in Loudoun County, Virginia, listed as "age 23, 5'7", florid complexion, light hair, blue eyes, resident of Fairfax County, farmer." He was transported to the Antheneum prison at Wheeling, Virginia (now West Virginia) and held there until transferred to Camp Chase, Ohio on 17 Jun 1864. [3] He appears on the parole document on 2 Mar 1865 but was not released. On 6 Jun 1865, after declaring allegiance to the United States, he was paroled to City Point, Virginia (now part of Hopewell, Virginia), the delivery point for paroled prisoners of war, with a note "a guerrilla, bushwhacker and horse thief."[4] Any stay by POWs at City Point was no more than over night and incidental to the transfer of the prisoners, so Robert would have been sent back home quickly. On 24 Dec 1868, Robert married Victoria Virginia Rector, probably in Centreville, Virginia:

On the 24th inst. by the same [Elder R. C. Leachman], Mr. ROBERT S. SPINDLE, to Miss VICTORIA VIRGINIA RECTOR, both of Fairfax county, Va.[5]

Robert and Victoria had nine children:

Gertrude Lenora "Gertie", b. 13 Oct 1869, d. 19 Oct 1942[6]
Lorena, b. 1 Nov 1871, d. 3 Jun 1949[7]
Gilbert Beebe, b. 26 Mar 1874, d. 21 Dec1940[8]
King Chandler, b. 6 Jul 1876, d. 11 Mar 1928[9]
Robert Leachman, Jr., b. 19 Dec 1879, d. 6 Sep 1927[10]
Agnes, b. 11 Sep 1880, d. 4 Dec 1944[11]
Grover Cleveland, b. 16 Aug 1884, d. 3 Mar 1965[12]
Katherine Alton "Kate", b. 21 Aug 1886, d. 30 May 1961[13]
Violet F.; b. 30 Jun 1888, d. 24 Jan 1896[14]

Robert was baptized at Frying Pan Baptist Church in 1878. On the 1879 Hopkins map of Fairfax County, Robert is shown as residing in Centreville, Fairfax County. In 1898, Robert's wife Victoria died.[15]

In the 1900 Census, Robert is widowed and has several children living with him.[16] During 1901-1904, he served on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, and he served as Justice of the Peace for Centreville. On 12 Sep 1903 he married Priscilla S. Bradshaw, a spinster.[17] She was from Loudon County and had been a teacher. From the Washiington Post newspaper in Sep 1903::

Virginia Weddings
Leesburg, Sept. 16.—Mr. Robert L. Spindle, a native of Prince William County, and Miss Priscilla S. Bradshaw, of Fairfax County, were married yesterday at the home of Elder E. V. White, of the Primitive Baptist Church, in Leesburg, Va. The age of the groom was sidxty-two, and of the bride sixty-one.

Priscilla Bradshaw Spindle died in 1909.[18] In the 1910 census, Robert's son Grover and daughter-in-law Grace were living with him on his large farm on Braddock Road in Centreville.[19] Two years later, in about 1912, Robert's son King Chandler, wife Orra, and children Evelyn, Roger, and King Jr. are also apparently living there; we have a photo of all of them in the front yard (with a couple of other grandchildren in the upstairs window):

About 1918, Robert sold his farm on Braddock Road to Ben and Daisy Gentry, whose daughter Wilma would later marry Robert's grandson Roger, and moved to another farm he owned on Chantilly Road in Centreville. In the 1920 Census, his soon Grover and daughter-in-law Grace were still living with him.[20] Here he is about that time with his extended family on his porch (Robert is in the back) and with his dog:

Robert died of arteriosclerosis and heart disease at his home in Centreville on 13 Jan 1924[21] and is buried at St. John's Episcopal Church in Centreville, Virginia.[1]
