Pension file dated 3 July 1820 states that served at in Brandywine and Germantown battles and Gen. Sullivan`s Indian Expedition in Rhode Island. Enlisted Feb 1775 served one yr. then to March 1781 for another four years. At 1820 he was aged 65, wife Hannah, son John. Widow seems also to have been pensioned. Hannah was 75 in 1823. [5][6]

SAR application states that John Stafford enlisted from Haddonfield region, New Jersey.
He was chosen to be one of George Washington's bodyguards because of his stalwart figure and military bearing but he was badly injured by a shot to the thigh at the Battle of Germantown that he was retired from active services.
