Biography

John Staines was born in 1893, his birth registered in Canowindra, NSW^[1].

John enlisted at Cootamundra, NSW in November 1915, service number 5492;he was a saddler, single, and 22 years old^[2]. Embarked for France in April, 1916 and was wounded in July 1916 and taken to hospital in England. He returned to France was wounded again (twice gassed) in April 1918. He returned to Australia in March 1919 and was discharged in June that year.

John enlisted in the Australian Army for WW2 at Paddington, NSW on 13th Nov., 1940; he was a boot-maker, married (wife Olive May Staines, also next of kin), living in Napier St, grey hair, blue eyes, CofE; army number 78244. He served in Australia and was discharged in December 1944^[3]

John died in March, 1961, his death registered in Brisbane, Qld^[4] and his ashes are buried in Mount Thompson cemetery in Brisbane with Olive Staines (1884-1973)^[5]. He has a memorial in the Queensland Garden of Remembrance, Bridgeman Downs, Brisbane, Queensland^[6].
