Arthur was the 2nd son of George Stanhope.
B.A. from Trinity Hall, 1648-9. One of the first Craven Scholars. M.A. 1652. M.A. (ad eund.) from Trinity College, Dublin, 1661. Archdeacon of Lismore (LL.D.), 1663-84. Vicar of Killaloan, 1663-75. Vicar of Kilcash, 1663-75.
He was collated Prebendary of Corbally (Waterford) on 10 October 1663 and installed on the same day. [ff.] He appears in the Visitation Book until 1678, in which year he was promoted to Dean of Waterford. The prebend became vacant and no longer exists. He was Vicar-General of Lismore and Waterford in 1670. He became Dean of Waterford by patent on 20 January 1678 and admitted on 5th February.
Arthur married Maria Smyth, daughter of Sir Percy Smyth, of Ballynatray, Co. Waterford.
