James Stanton, noted abolitionist, was born 16 Jul 1779 at Southampton County, Virginia, the son of James and Ann (Butler) Stanton.[1][2]
It appears that James first married Agness Chappell, daughter of Benjamin and Agness Chappell and a member of South River Monthly Meeting, on 17 Apr 1802.[3] There is no record of the death of Agness (Chappell) Stanton found to date.
James married, it appears second, Ann Robinson 15 Oct 1817.[4] The records suggest that Ann was previously married and had two children by that marriage, Elizabeth and Martha, who are identified in 1825 records with the surnames Robinson.
On 24 Sep 1825 James Stanton asked the Western Branch Monthly Meeting in Virginia for a certificate to transfer to the Fairfield (Ohio) Monthly Meeting. This document names his family as "his wife Ann Stanton and their children Elizabeth M Robinson, Martha I (J?) Robinson, Benjamin C Stanton, William R Stanton, Catherine Ann Stanton and Deborah Jane Stanton (and the orphans of John Stanton, dec'd, to wit, Mary Stanton, James Stanton and Robert Stanton, they being members in good esteem with us..."[5] Another certificate is recorded following for William Stanton, minor son of John Stanton Dec'd, for removal to Wainsville Monthly Meeting in Ohio. These certificates reference the children James and John and have created confusion in some genealogical research.
Springboro Area History states that James arrived in Ohio in 1826. Here the family home was named Spring Hill (National Register of Historic Places at 8894 Tanglewood Dr., Springboro, Ohio) and would house five generations of the family.
He passed away before 28 Jan 1852, the date on which his will was filed with the probate court.[6] His place of burial does not appear to be recorded.
Known Children[5]
This family also raised the orphans of the elder brother John:
