Biography

Meta (Stark) Tanner was born in Middlesex, England.

Meta (Stark) Tanner migrated from England to Australia in 1913 aboard R.M.S. Otranto.

Meta was the daughter of Heinrich Stark and Mary Ann Wright, and was born in 1882 in Whitechapel, Middlesex, England.^[1]

Meta had six children in England with James Heyworth Dunn. They were never married, although they falsely stated they were married on the 1911 census.^[2]

On 23rd April 1913 Meta married as a spinster to Thomas Tanner, in the Register Office at West Ham, Essex. It was Meta's only legally recognised marriage.^[9] Shortly afterwards the couple emigrated to Australia, on the R.M.S. Otranto, and they disembarked at Melbourne, Victoria, on 16th June 1913.^[10] Meta left her children behind in England. Meta and Thomas had one son.

Her marriage to Tanner was shortlived and Meta entered into a de facto relationship with William Robert Amphlett, with whom she had a further five children:

• Walter Frederick Amphlett^[16]

When her relationship with Amphlett ended, Meta entered into a de facto relationship with Denis Thomas Morey.^[17]

Meta died on 31st January 1961 at 70 O'Grady Street, Albert Park, due to coronary sclerosis and myocardial degeneration. Her death certificate indicated that she was also known as Meta Morey and only included one legal marriage, to Thomas Tanner. The only child listed is Henry, from her marriage. Meta was interred in Springvale Cemetery.^[18]
