The birth of Joshua Starkey is recorded among the records of All Hallow's Parish in Anne Arundel County, Maryland on 25 Dec 1708. He was the son of John William Starkey and Elizabeth Page (Boyle) Starkey. [1] Joshua moved north to Baltimore County where his marriage to Hannah Mead(s) on 29 Sept. 1743 is recorded among the records of St. John's Parish. [2] There is no record of the birth of any children. He was deceased less than a year after this marriage on 22 APR 1744. [3]
In 1734 & 35 he served as the administrator of his father's estate.
Death
Joshua wrote his will on 2 June 1743 and it was proved in court 6 June 1744. The will states his wife (not named), to receive ½ land; Brother Jonathan to receive the other ½ of land and first ½ when Joshua’s wife dies; If Jonathan dies, land to go to brother Joseph; If Joseph dies, land to go to Brother Jacob; Personal estate to be divided between wife and Jonathan Starkey; Clothing to go to John Starkey; Executor: Jonathan Starkey; Wit: Roderick Cheyne, John Hires, Hannah Cotterel. Besides his wife, the will mentions his four brothers: Jonathan, Jacob, Joseph and John. [4][5]
An inventory of his estate:
This is a True & perfect Inventory of the goods and Chattels Rites & Credits of Joshua Starkey deceased as was Sued to us or has came to our knowledge. [List of items including: clothing, furniture, livestock; 1 white serving boy 3 yrs. To serve; 1 white serving man 2 yrs. To serve; debt in the hands of John Starkey; debt in the hands of Joseph Starkey, Jonathan Starkey]; We do hereby Certify the above to be a true Inventory of the goods and Chattels of Joshua Starkey Deceased as the Same Exhibited to us by the admr and value of the same amounting in the whole to the sum of Two hundred & fifteen pounds and six shillings and 9 pence Current money of this Province. In witness whereof we the subscribers have hereunto sett our hands & seals this 8th day of April 1745. As Kind [Kin?] to the deced as approve of the appraisement, [Signed] William Andrew, John Holt, John Starkey, Hannah Starkey; As Creditors to the deced we approve of the appraisement, [Singed] Walter Tolley, Stephen Onion; On the 1st day of Sept. 1745 came Jonathan Starkey and made oath of the holy Evangelist of Almighty God that the foregoing is a just and perfect Inventory of all and Singular ye Goods and Chattels which were of the deced that came to his hands at the time of making hereof and that what hath since or shall hereafter come to his hands or possession he will return in an additional Inventory that he knows of no concealment of any part or parcell thereof by any person whatsoever and that if he shall discover any concealment or suspect any to be he will acqt ye Commy General for the time being or his deputy with such discovery or cause of suspicion that it may be enquired into and that he will well and truly give an account of all and Every part of ye deced Personal Estate that shall hereafter Come to his hands Possession of Knowledge.
