Re: James STARR, son of Moses & Margery Jo Cottrell : Wednesday, April 21, 1999 (from RootsWeb)

Thought I would share the following article, which was sent to me by Ruby Simonson McNeil (another STARR descendant). The aritcle is from The Historical Review of Berks Co., published by the Historical Society of Berks Co., Reading, Pennsylvania - April 1947 (Volume XII-#3) Page 74 "James STARR, the sixth child of Moses and Margery STARR, was born December 19, 1762. In the year 1786 he married 'out of meeting' Sarah Barger, daughter of Simeon and Sarah Barger, who was not a member of the Friends. For this breach of discipline, James STARR made a prompt acknowledgement, and retained his membership with the Friends.

James and Sarah STARR had one child, Esther STARR. The mother died at Maiden Creek in 1788. On March 8, 1790, James STARR married again 'out of meeting', Sarah Kinsler, daughter of Edward and Martha (Hutton) Kinsler, who was born at Maiden Creek, October 6, 1768. He made another prompt acknowledgement and remained a member of the Friends. They also removed to Roaring Creek Valley in 1790, where Sarah made a request to become a member of the Meeting in 1794, which was granted. In this locality, eight of their eleven children were born. In May 1804, they requested a certificate to Yonge Street Monthly Meeting, in York Co., Ontario, to which contry they removed the same year, and where their three youngest children were born. Alt hough no record has been found as to where, or the time, James STARR and his wife died, it is believed they spent the remainder of their lives in York Co. Ontario. In recent years, the compiler of these records has been in commu nication with some of James STARR's descendants - the Elmer STARR family of N ewmarket, Ontario. And it will be of some interest to hear that they are very active Friends and valuable members of Yonge Street Monthly Meeting. Also, a t our 1940 and 194l gatherings we were favored to have with us a great-grandaughter of James and Sarah STARR, Hannah STARR Outland of Media, Pennsylvania, who is a member of Chester Monthly Meeting."

According to Ruby the article gives info on the other children of Moses and Margery (Pearson) STARR.

... and what is "marrying out of meeting" exactly I wanted to know:

Marriage Under the Care of the Meeting

At a Quaker wedding, two persons join together with their families and friends in a Meeting for Worship. Standing together in the presence of God and the assembled community members, they give themselves to each other, dedicating themselves to a lifelong partnership in the care of each other and to the service of God and humanity. They ask for God’s blessing and the blessing of the Quaker community upon their lives.

The form of the Quaker wedding ceremony remains the same as it was in the early days of the Society and is a natural expression of what we believe.

In keeping with Friends’ religious ideals, a Quaker marriage or a similar committed union includes the following:

  • emphasis on the spiritual nature of the union
  • emphasis on the equality of the partners
  • avoidance of undue haste in the clearness process
  • the Meeting’s responsibility to the couple married under its care
  • lifelong commitment and sexual fidelity
  • seeking early inclusion of family
  • statement of the vows by both partners
  • signing of the wedding certificate by all present at the ceremony

Moderation and simplicity in all proceedings also reflect Quaker ideals.

Friends feel that the Meeting for Worship on the occasion of marriage should be simple and reflective, exemplifying the importance of the step the couple is taking. When a couple wishes to be married under the care of the Monthly Meeting, they write a letter stating their intention and request that the Meeting begin the clearness process. The good order of Friends requires that adequate time for the clearness process elapse between the sending of the request and the desired date of the wedding. Usually the marriage is under the care of the Meeting where both partners’ memberships reside. Should one or the other partner hold membership in a Meeting other than the one overseeing the wedding, a letter of approval should be obtained from that Meeting.
