Biography

Birth and Early Life

Daniel Spencer Emmons Starr was born in 18 March 1810 in East Haddam, Middlesex, Connecticut, United States to Issac Starr and Elizabeth Emmons.

Later Life

He moved from Connecticut some time before 1863. There are Mobile, Montgomery, Alabama directory entry for his family: "Starr, Daniel S.E. (Bessie M), grocer 105 Mobile, h 511 Mildred". Below that is: "Starr, Daniel S.E., Jr. car inspr L & N, bds 511 Mildred." There are many of the same family here including Daniel's widow, "Sophronia Starr (wid Daniel) 515 Mildred."

Marriage and Family

He married Sophronia Harrison on 3 September 1837 in Butler, Alabama.

  1. Elizabeth F. Starr was born in 1839 in Montgomery, Montgomery, Alabama, United States.
  2. Daniel Spencer Emmons Starr, Jr. was born on 23 July 1843 in Alabama, United States. He married Sarah Jane Comer, called Sallie, on 31 March 1870 in Montgomery County, Alabama. Daniel, Jr. died on 29 October 1908 in Montgomery, Montgomery, Alabama, United States.
  3. Mary L. Starr was born in about 1846 in Alabama, United States. She probably died young, before 1860.
  4. Thomas Ebenezer Starr called Ebenezer, was born on 16 July 1852 in Montgomery, Montgomery, Alabama, United States. He married Artemisa Lenora Clark in Alabama, United States. Ebenezer died on 21 July 1893 in Montgomery, Montgomery, Alabama, United States.

Lynching and Death and Burial

He was arrested for his views against the Confederacy and placed in jail. A mob broke in and took him. He died on 14 March 1863 at the hands of that mob who lynched him for publishing the abolition manuscript in Montgomery, Montgomery, Alabama, United States. No one was convicted of the lynching. He was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery, Montgomery, Montgomery, Alabama.

Inscription on headstone: "Father and Mother--DANIEL S.E. STARR born in Middlesex, Co., Conn. March 18, 1810. Died in Montgomery, Ala. March 14, 1863. Aged 52 yrs, 11 mod, 26 ds. SOPHRONIA wife of Daniel S.E. Starr born March 3, 1817. Died April 22, 1903. Aged 86 yrs, 1 mth, 19 ds. Rest in Peace. Erected by their daughter SARAH J. STARR." PLEASE DO NOT CHANGE the placement of the reference and footnote notations. 1/2 of the census data and other is lost if you do. No rule that I know of that says you have to have no space between "Sources" and References or can't have footnotes. And yes, I have read the "Help" page. Thank you.
