John Stedman was born [1] 08 Jan 1764 in Woodstock Township, Windham, Connecticut, British Colonial America. He is the son of Nathan Stedman and Prudence Hurlbut.
Private John Stedman served with 19th Regiment, Connecticut Militia during the American Revolution.
When he was a teenager he volunteered for the Connecticut Millita and served in Chapman's Regiment of Foot for forty-three days. (Start date: Aug 2, 1778; End Date: Sep 12, 1778)
His death date and location are unknown at this time. He last appears in the 1810 Census in Windham, so he stayed behind when his family moved.
Further research
According to Nathan's pension record, he lost a brother on a privateer ship. John would be the only one old enought to have been on such a ship. Are the 1800 and 1810 Census records for a different John Stedman and this one died aboard a ship during the war? It does seem odd that, if he was still alive, he didn't follow his entire family to NC
