Charles was born about 1838. He was the son of John Steel and Mary Wharton.[1]
He was a farmer who enlisted with the Union Army on 3 September 1861 for three years. At the time he was twenty four years old, six feet tall, with brown hair and grey eyes. .[2]
He served as Third Sergeant with Company E of the 1st Delaware Infantry. In September 1862, he was promoted to 2nd Sergeant. He was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863.[3]
When his enlistment term ran out at the end of 1863, Charles re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer. On 5 March 1864, he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and transferred to Company B of the 1st Delaware.
In April 1864, Charles was temporarily placed in command of Company A of the 1st Delaware Volunteers.[4]
One month later, Charles died on 10 May 1864, of wounds received in action. They occurred during the Battle of the Wilderness, 5-7 May 1864,[5] in which the 1st Delaware took part.[6]
Charles is buried at Fredericksburg National Cemetery.[7]
