Notes

Note N528Earl, I have a 1900 census record of Sam C. Steel in Brown County, which as you probably know, is next door to Comanche County. He's listed as married to Charity, with son George C., daughter Mary C., and his half-sister Margaret A., who is the daughter of Thomas Steel and a woman with the last name of Lattimore. Samuel's father Thomas Steel was born about 1804 in NC and settled in first Clark County, AR, which part of became Pike County, AR. He can be found on the Arkansas Territory census of 1830 in Clark County, then on a few tax lists for Pike County in the 1830's, and then on the 1840 Pike County census. He next is found on the Hempstead County, AR census of 1850 & 1860. Hempstead is directly below Pike County. After that Thomas is found on the Hunt County, TX census of 1870. He died in 1879. His second wife Sarah Ludewell, whom he married in 1847 in AR, is in the household of Samuel on the 1880 census in Comanche County. She is then in the household of her grandson John T. Lee on the 1900 census for Brown County. Both Sarah Steele and Sam Steel are in Precinct 2 on that census. I haven't checked but I thought Sarah Steele might be found on some records in Brown County. Perhaps a record of her death is recorded somewhere like in a newspaper perhaps. I haven't been researching this branch of the Steeles for long so I haven't gotten around to looking into Sarah. I believe that Samuel's half-sister Margaret A. Steel is found in the household of Thomas and Hannah Lindley on the 1880 Hopkins County, TX census. Margaret can be found on the 1850 Hempstead County, AR census in the home of Thomas and Sarah Steel. Also, a Sarah Elizabeth Lindley, who I believe is the daughter of Thomas Lindley, married Thomas Steel. This Thomas Steel is the son of James Milton Steel. James Milton Steel is the first son of Thomas Steel born in 1804 by his first wife of last name Lattimore. So, James Milton Steel is a half-brother of Samuel Custer Steel who married Charity Lindley. And James Milton Steel's son Thomas Steel, who married Sarah Elizabeth Lindley is a nephew of Samuel Custer Steel. The younger Thomas Steel (married to Sarah Lindley) is found on the 1880 Hill County, TX census. He is living next door to his younger brother Wiley Ludwell Steel, who is also a son of James Milton Steel. Thomas and Wiley Steel can be found on the 1860 Hempstead County, AR census in the home of James M. Steel. They are living five homes from Thomas and Sarah Steel, and Samuel C. Steel (age 7) can be found in that household. I've been trying to make a concrete connection between the Thomas Steel born in 1804 in NC with my ancestor John Jehu Pyles Steel, who was in Nevada County, AR (next door to Hempstead County). I believe they are brothers but haven't been able to prove it. But that's my research problem. Eventually I'll get all of this loaded and send you some information that is more readable.
