Biography
Gershom was born in 1st May 1817 in Edinburgh City, Scotland, son of John and Margaret [Gourlay] Steell . At the time of entry into the Edinburgh Parish register, he was recorded as the 8th child, 5th son born to John and Margaret
[1][2].
Gershom's Father was a carver and gilder by profession. Gershom's brother, John Junior, followed in his Father's footsteps and was so successful as a sculptor he was knighted in1876. Another brother, Gourlay, was noted as an animal painter.
[3][4][5].
On 9th November 1858, aged 41, Gershom married Mary Marr, also aged 41, in Edinburgh's port of Leith. The marriage was solemnized at 5 Vanburgh Place, Leith according to the form of the Free Church of Scotland.
Gershom's trade or profession was recorded as Post Office Clerk.
[6][7].
[8].
The 1861 Census recorded him living, along with Mary and one live in servant, at 7 Annandale Street, Edinburgh; a 6 six room property in what appears to be a tenement with multiple family units. He is recorded as a GPO Clerk.
[9].
The 1871 Census recorded him still living at 7 Annandale Street, Edinburgh, with Mary and one live in servant
[10].
Gershom died at 23 Leamington Terrace in Edinburgh, a substantial terraced house, on the 30th August 1900 aged 82.
This address is also referenced in Mary's probate and would appear to be the marital home.
[11].
The cause of death given was "malignant disease of the pelvis" and his trade or profession was now recorded as "GPO Accountant"
[12].
Research Notes
Christian name indexed as Gersham on Scotland's People marriage records [6].
No children from this union found. The fact that his death is reported on his death certificate by a niece and not a son/daughter or son/daughter in law tends to indicate that there were none [12]
