Elizabeth was a convict sent to Tasmania when she was 14 years old for stealing a handkerchief and an apron from her employer (she was leaving the employer, and the items were found in her suitcase). She got a 14 year sentence.
She eventually met Thomas Shackel (a free man) who requested permission to marry her even though she was still a prisoner. (Elizabeth had at least 2 offers of marriage from other men before this, that were declined by the prison service). Thomas had a good job as an overseer of large properties in Tasmania.
They ended up at Perth, Tasmania for some time at Eskleigh Estate (it was known then as "Scone" and was owned by the Richie brothers). The current house at Eskleigh was not the house they would have lived in.
