William Stephens was the son of Johnathan and Catherine Stephens. He was baptised in St Austell on 8 June, 1800. William Stephens, a miner, married Rebecca Couch on 9 January, 1822 and they settled in William's home town of St Austell. They appear to have had at least 9 children, some of whom died in infancy: Thomas (1823), William (1826), Elizabeth (1827), John (1830), Jonathan (1832), Rebecca (1834), Jonathan (1836), Henry (1838), George (1841), Jonathan (1844). William died in a mine accident on 30 March 1847, and was buried at Holy Trinity Church in St Austell on 4 April 1847. His wife Rebecca emigrated to South Australia with her family in 1848.
