Biography

William Newton Stephenson, a well known Coffeen resident and father of James Stephenson of Hillsboro, died Saturday morning at the St Francis Hospital in Litchfield, at the age of 75 years, 5 months and 7 days.

The deceased was an old resident of this county. He was born in Hillsboro Township, March 8, 1850, and spent most of his life in Coffeen. He had made his home for two years or more in Hillsboro, with his daughter, Mrs Charles Friesland.

He was a veteran of the Civil War and enlisted as a regular January 22, 1866. Shortly after being mustered out on October 23, 1868, he was united in marriage with Sarah Ellen Edwards, who survives him.

Six children were born to this union: James Stephenson of Hillsboro; Richard, of Witt; Mrs Effie Friesland, wife of Charles Friesland, of Hillsboro; Mrs Ben Dees of Detroit; Mrs Charles Smith, Greenville, and Otis, of Coffeen. Three brothers also survive: George, of Springfield, Mo; Ed, of Marshall, Okla, and Charles of Hillsboro. There are five grandchildren: Cecil Friesland of Nokomis; Mrs Carl Graham of Hillsboro, Miss Albertina Stephenson of Springfield, and Cleo and Frank Dees of Detroit. There is also one great-grandchild, Billy, son of Mr and Mrs Carl Graham.

Mr Stephenson worked in the Coffeen mine and was a member of the UMWA, Local No 980, there. He was well known in mining circles over the whole county and had a host of friends who were greatly shocked to hear of his death.

Funeral services were held from the home of his daughter, Mrs Charles Friesland, in Hillsboro, Monday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev John D Kruwel officiating, and interment was made in Oak Grove cemetery.
