James was born in 1826. He was the son of Samuel Stephenson and Mary Shields.

James Harvey Stephenson married Martha Minerva Montgomery in Limestone County,Alabama on March 6,1852. James Harvey Stephenson and family were living in Giles County,Tennessee in 1860.

When the Civil War started, James Harvey Stephenson enlisted in Giles County,Tennessee and served in James T. Wheeler's 1st Tennessee Cavalry. He applied for his pension in Ellis County,Texas in 1898. His brother Sylvester Brown Stephenson signed an affidavit that his brother,James Harvey Stephenson was telling the truth about his service.
