James Henry Stevens[1] was born around 1863 in Michigan, United States, to parents George Stevens and Lucinda (DePeel) Stevens.
On June 23, 1870, the Stevens family was recorded for the United States Census. They lived in Speaker Township in Sanilac County, Michigan. The family included George (farmer, age 45), Lucinda (housekeeper, age 34), George W. (laborer and student, age 17), Adaline (student, age 14), Archie (student, age 12), Milly (student, age 10), and Henry (student, age 8). Their real estate was valued at $200.[2]
The Stevens family lived Speaker, Sanilac County, Michigan during the 1880 United States Census. The household contained George (farmer, age 54) and Lucinda (keeping house, age 44), plus their children Henry (laborer, age 17), Ida May (student, age 8), and Archibald (laborer, age 21).[3]
Henry, at age 26, married 20-year-old Ida A. Williams on April 24, 1889. The wedding took place at Brockway Centre, St. Clair County, Michigan, United States with Minister Jesse N. Crandall officiating and W.M. Williams of Brockway and Ida Stevens of Speaker as witnesses. Henry was a carpenter in Brockway Centre while Ida was a dressmaker living in Brockway Township.[4]
