Biography

Killed in the - Tangiwai - Train disaster, aged 20. He was travelling home to his family for Christmas^[1]

He was initially buried at Karori Cemetery, Wellington, with all the bodies from the tragedy. Then later he was moved to the Waihi Cemetery with his mother.

John's death was a terrible lose to the family. He was an only child in a family that had many tragedies. Even his mother had died young, and John had a "good" Government Job in Wellington.

Research Notes

It's no surprise that many in the family have a secret tale to share about him. What is fact - what is fiction? One important rumour is that he had a girlfriend called "Valerie", who was allegedly pregnant (or had his child), when he died. Another person though this child was called Wendy Joanne Stevens.
